On Saturday 26th April, I had the pleasure of welcoming four lovely ladies to my home workshop in Hunmanby for a full day of wet felting. The sun was shining through the windows, although, a chill wind, a proper spring day here on the Yorkshire coast, setting just the right mood for a day of making and good company.
With cups of coffee on hand and wool at the ready, everyone got stuck in, learning the process of building up their felt pictures from start to finish. There’s something very grounding about wet felting – working with natural fibres and time-honoured techniques, just as folk have done for generations.
Beautiful Work All Round
Throughout the day, it was great to see each person’s picture develop in its own way. Some took inspiration from the fields and coastlines around us. One was felting a mouse in the grass! No two pictures were alike, and every finished piece looked fantastic — a real credit to the time, patience, and effort everyone put in.
There was a real sense of quiet focus as the layers of wool were built up, soaked, and worked by hand, with good conversation along the way. It’s days like these that remind me why sharing these traditional skills is so important — they bring people together and let creativity have its place, without any rush or pressure.
Simple Pleasures
One of the nicest parts of the day was seeing everyone take real pride in their work. It’s easy to overlook how satisfying it is to make something from start to finish, especially with the simple materials nature provides. In our fast-moving world, a day spent making by hand feels all the more valuable. It’s these small, steady pleasures that stay with you long after the wool has dried.
Looking Ahead
Workshops like these are a reminder of how rewarding it is to take a bit of time out from the busy world and make something by hand. I hope everyone left feeling proud of what they’d achieved, and perhaps with a spark of inspiration to keep felting at home. I’m already looking forward to the next workshop and seeing what wonderful creations come to life.
