Painting with Wool in Hunmanby
On Sunday 22nd February, we welcomed a lovely group to the Feather Felts Workshop in Hunmanby for our 2D picture needle felting session. From 10am to 1pm, the studio was filled with quiet concentration as wool fibres were layered, shaped, and gently worked into place. There is something very satisfying about creating a picture in this way, slowly building an image strand by strand.
Learning to Create Depth and Texture
The workshop focused on using wool much like paint, blending colours, softening edges, and adding texture to bring scenes to life. We explored how light and shade can be suggested through careful layering, and how small changes in fibre placement can completely alter the feel of a piece. Step by step guidance meant everyone could build confidence as their picture developed.
Individual Scenes, Individual Styles
One of the best parts of a 2D picture workshop is seeing how different each finished piece becomes. Some chose peaceful landscapes, others leaned towards woodland themes, but every artwork reflected the maker’s own style and choices. Watching each design evolve across the morning was a real pleasure, and the standard of work was fantastic.
Handmade Artwork to Take Home
By the end of the session, everyone left with a completed felted picture ready to frame and enjoy at home. With all materials, tools, and refreshments provided, the focus remained on taking time and enjoying the making. It was a relaxed and creative few hours, and I will be sharing photographs from the workshop below to show the beautiful range of finished pieces.
